Where Classical Realism Meets Cinematic Soul
"A painting captures a universe in a frozen moment; a film is a thousand paintings set into living, breathing rhythm."
Sethu Eyyal (born 6 January 1971) is a distinguished Indian filmmaker, fine artist, and portrait painter originating from the historic village of Eyyal in Thrissur, Kerala. His artistic journey bridges classical Indian fine art painting, art direction, and independent feature film direction.
Deeply immersed from childhood in Kerala's living heritage—temple murals, Valluvanad folklore, Kathakali theatricality, and Carnatic music—Sethu emerged as one of the most respected portrait painters in the region. He gained widespread acclaim and affection as the personal painter for legendary singer Dr. K. J. Yesudas and classical music patriarch Swami V. Dakshinamoorthy, immortalizing musical doyens in timeless oil and acrylic canvases.
Parallel to his canvases, Sethu made a celebrated mark on Malayalam cinema. He completed a rigorous directorial apprenticeship under cinema auteur A. K. Lohithadas, contributing as assistant director to landmark films including Chakram (2003), Kasthuri Maan (2005), Chakkara Muthu (2006), and Nivedyam (2007). In 2020, he made his feature directorial debut with the multilingual musical drama Shyamaragam.

Shyamaragam (2020) & Swami V. Dakshinamoorthy
Sethu Eyyal's directorial debut, Shyamaragam, holds a poignant and sacred place in Indian cinema history. It was the final cinematic work composed by veteran music maestro Swami V. Dakshinamoorthy before his passing.
Scripted by veteran national award-winning scenarist Madampu Kunjukuttan, the film weaves an emotional narrative tracing four generations of a classical musical family associated with the legacy of Dr. K.J. Yesudas. Featuring prominent performances by Y. G. Mahendran, Santhi Krishna, and Madampu Kunjukuttan himself, the film stands as an enduring tribute to classical Carnatic tradition.
